Intro: Indecent Excision are an Italian brutal death metal band, a two-piece. Our review of their latest wasn’t entirely glowing seeing as I expected more from a band on Grindethic, but the band is still a cool outfit for sure and probably one of few wanting to do any favours for this here webzine. Hannes is guitarist, drum-programmer extraordinaire and probably sole writer in the band. We’d like to thank the dude for being passionate about the answers sent back to us. And here’s the rest (yeah, I suck at intros).

Global Domination: Tell us about your band – when you started, past releases, influences etc.

Indecent Excision: The band started as a small project around the year 2006, actually I was just recording some riffs and experimenting with the drum machine. Step by step the thing was getting shape, first as a one-man-project with some vocal help by Paolo Chiti (Gorefuck, Corpse Fucking Art, Putridity) and Alessandro Simonetti (Egemony, Modus Delicti) on the “Tortured, Impaled and Dismembered” Demo 2008. In the same year I got in touch with Bazza and we immediately started rehearsing. In 2009 we released another 3-Track-Promo. We did some local shows and kept working on new material, so we decided to go in the studio to record a full length album. We found Grindethic Records interested in doing the release and now we are again working on some new material and doing as much shows as possible. As for influences, I think everything brutal we were/are listening to. Main influences of course Devourment, Disgorge, Dying Fetus… you know, all those classics haha…

Can you foresee recruiting a drummer in the future, or are you happy with how things are going?

A real drummer would be great, actually we had one for some months but he had to leave the band due to some personal issues. We are happy with the drum machine as it allows us to play live and to realize our music. It is very hard to find a drummer in our area, unfortunately we don’t have a death metal scene here and you surely know how hard it is to find a drummer with the needed passion and skills for this extreme music. If we would find one we would be happy but in the meantime we continue with the drum machine.

How do you think your music compares with Septycal Gorge and Putridity? The former isn’t offering anything new but are still pretty killer, the latter is and is totally killer. Where do you think Indecent Excision fits in?

It obviously flatters me that you mention Indecent Excision along with Septycal Gorge and Putridity but honestly I don’t like comparisons between bands. I think it is a matter personal of taste. Musically those guys are on a higher level than we are and not only because they have a human drummer but also because they have 2 albums out already and therefore have more experience. Personally I like them both, they are quite different and that’s good.

What’s the word on tours? Does Grindethic finance or does it come out of your pocket?

We did not do tours yet, only some single gigs and festivals. We finance them by ourselves or get some help by the organizers.

You performed at Neurotic Christmas Deathfest. How was it?

No, we didn’t perform there.

First time in the UK? Tell us about any other European places you’ve been to, crowds etc.

We have not been to the UK yet but we are planning to have a gig towards the year’s end in Scotland! We played in Italy, Austria and in September we will play at the NRW Death Fest in Germany. We can’t wait! About the crowds, Italy has not a big scene, so at concerts unfortunately there are never many people. In Austria it was a bit better because there were people from Germany and Switzerland as well.

Do you guys tour with a drum machine or do you have a live drummer?

Yes, at the moment we play with a drum machine. We couldn’t find a stable live drummer yet.

Seriously buddy, what’s with all the samples on the new record? You ruin that thing.

Oh, sorry that you don’t like the samples haha, yeah, maybe there are too many on the album. I hear, some people like them, others don’t and that’s OK. The idea behind the samples was to create a “frame atmosphere” around the music, kind of “breaks” between the songs in order to avoid that it gets boring. But I understand that a lot of people just want to hear the music and don’t care about the rest. Next time we will put less intros and samples on the CD.

What films are they from? I take it you’re quite the film buff, so how does film inspire you to write music?

They are from different kinds of movies like action movies as “The last Boyscout”, horror movies as “Hostel” or also video games as “Mortal Kombat” to mention a few. Well, movies don’t really inspire me to write new songs but it is interesting to combine them with the music. In the past I was quite a lot into all this movie stuff but lately I have not enough time to follow very well what’s going on in the movie scene.

Tell us about your vocalist. In the booklet to your latest album, he cites inspiration from a whole bunch of vocalists he sounds nothing like (Layne Staley, Phil Anselmo…); is he in bands we’re not aware of, or does he just dig these people?

I don’t think that those vocalists inspired him to do gutturals but maybe they inspired him to be a vocalist in general. I am not sure though, never asked him about this actually. He is in no other band right now, although he has a little brutal side project going on at the moment. And well, who says that we only have to listen to brutal death metal? I also dig different music styles outside the brutal underground. I think it is always good to get inspiration also from other musical genres.

What has the response to “Deification of the Grotesque” been like?

We are very happy about the response, we have a lot of good feedback from all over the world and we are glad that “Deification of the Grotesque” permitted us to get into the brutal underground scene. We love to keep in touch with our supporters and that’s also why we try to play as more shows as we can in order to reach as many people as possible and to catch up in person with people we only know from E-Mails ecc.

Do you frequent any SMN forums?

Not really, sometimes I check them for news about releases and concerts. Usually the Devourment Forum (US) and the Brutal Death Forum (Italy).

How do you think 2011 has shaped up metal-wise? I bet you’re a big fan of the new Putridity. Are you into more dynamic metal bands? Any other metal sub-genres? What are you looking forward to in 2012?

There were a few good releases in 2011 like Condemned, Putrdity, Gorgasm, Carnal Disfigurement, Dysentery, Visceral Disgorge, Origin… Looking forward to Guttural Secrete, Sick, Malignancy, Cryptopsy…

What made you want to play metal in the first place? Which album sold it to you?

There was not one specific album that brought me into metal. In my case it was a kind of gradual process. As a kid I liked punk, I bought a guitar and started to play that. After a while it got boring and I went into death and thrash and when also that was boring to me I found out about brutal death metal haha. That was and is my musical element.

Give us a run-down of your gear, who your guitar idols are, how long you’ve been playing etc.

I am using an Ibanez Universe from the 90s which goes through my Engl Fireball 100. As a cabin I have a Marshall Vintage with Celestions, not the best but its ok. I don’t use any effects or additional gear, that’s all. As for idols/influences I can only mention the same as above: Disgorge (US), Devourment, Deeds of Flesh, all this badass stuff. I play since I am 14 but never took lessons, so I try to do my best haha…

What are your plans for the future? Any new tracks written?

Yes, we are currently working on new songs and we plan to release another full length as soon as possible.
